Considering iphone insurance? Your questions answered

Here are a few questions that may have occurred to you on the subject of iphone insurance.

Will mobile insurance cover my Blackberry or an iphone?

Typically, no, it may not.

Insurers may typically regard mobile cover as applying to standard mobiles phones and they may be unlikely to include a Blackberry or iphone in that definition.

However, you may find that there is specific iphone insurance or blackberry phone cover available.

Why are there different policies?

The risk profiles for various gadgets are simply different – as, of course, typically are the insured values.

Do all iphone insurance policies offer the same cover?

Although there may be some general similarities in a few areas, it may be risky to presume that they are all identical or even very similar.

To take one example – not all policies may offer global cover (cover when outside of the UK) as standard. That may or may not be important to you but there may be other similar examples that are.

That’s why it is necessary to look closely at the cover detail of a policy before coming to the conclusion that it’s the policy for you.

What does airtime abuse cover mean?

This is a cover offered by some policies and it relates to one unpleasant aspect that sometimes arises if you’ve had a phone stolen.

Your contract with your service provider may state that you are responsible for all costs of calls made on the phone even when someone else makes them.

If your phone is stolen and you notice immediately, you may be able to get your service provider to immediately disconnect the line to prevent such a thing happening. If you do not and the thief enjoys his or her self by phoning around at your expense (prior to you getting the line disconnected) some policies will reimburse you for the calls made – though specified time limits and amounts may apply.

What is unattended theft and why is it excluded from some policies?

Insurers (in any field) typically expect a policyholder to undertake certain duties of care and responsibility in terms of protecting their own interests as well as those of the insurer.

To put it bluntly, they expect the policyholder to take reasonable care of their own iphone and simply walking off and leaving it unattended in a public place may simply invite theft.

That’s why some policies may only cover theft if it occurs while the iphone is in your possession.

Fortunately, some other iphone insurance policies may cover this form of theft (unattended) – providing your iphone was securely locked away at the time the theft took place.
